Puka Dog Recipe

Our recent trip to Poipu, Kauai, where we ate delicious Hawaiian-style hot dogs after boogie boarding at Brennecke’s Beach, gave us the idea for this dish. They’re a tropical take on an American classic. You will absolutely adore these!

What do they call hot dogs in Hawaii?

The most common varieties are Puka Dogs and Hula Dogs! This Hawaiian hot dog dish begins with freshly baked rolls that have been hollowed out with a hot poker. It is then stuffed with either Polish or vegan sausage. Final touches include their unique garlic-lemon sauce and your choice of tropical relishes. Since the hot poker is not readily available to the majority of home cooks, I suggest using this hot dog bun driller instead.

How do you make a Puka Dog?

    Puka Dog Recipe

Begin by preparing the Mustard and Garlic Lemon Sauce with Passion Fruit. I recommend purchasing Aunty Lilikoi’s Passion Fruit Mustard if you want to avoid an additional step. The eatery serves and sells the product. Additionally, they produce a Habanero Passion Fruit Mustard that is ideal for all those hot food enthusiasts.

Next, you will hollow out a sandwich bun that has not been cut. Then load it with a Polish or veggie dog that has been grilled. Add passion fruit mustard, garlic lemon sauce, and a tropical fruit relish on the top of the dish. Yum!

    What is a Mango Dog?

    Puka Dog Recipe

The Mango Dog is one of the most popular menu options at Puka Dog. This Hawaiian hot dog, known as the Kauai Special, is prepared with their unique mango relish, garlic-lemon sauce, and Aunty Lilikoi’s passion fruit mustard.

If mango isn’t your thing, they offer a variety of other Hawaiian hot dogs. Pineapple relish is used to prepare the Pineapple Field Puka Dog. Banana relish is used to create the Waimea Canyon Puka Dog. Sunset on Polihale with Papaya Relish. Cruise along Na Pali with Star Fruit Relish Coconut Relish is used to create the Coconut Beach.

You can choose classic ketchup, yellow mustard, Dijon mustard, or sweet pickle relish if you’re not feeling experimental.

Is Hula Dog the same as Puka Dog?

Yes! According to Wikipedia, Rick and Dominique Quinette created the Puka Dog firm in 2000. Rick retained Puka Dog after the couple’s divorce, while Dominique gained control of the Oahu shops and business. The expansion of Hula Dog to Southern California and Maui. However, Puka Dogs are only found in Kauai in the Hawaiian Islands.

Hula Dog provides Lilikoi and Guava mustards, whereas Puka Dog employs Aunty Lilikoi passion fruit mustard. In addition, Hula Dog offers three bread options: white, wheat, and bacon taro. There is only one white bun option at Puka Dog.

Does Kings Hawaiian make hot dog buns?

    Puka Dog Recipe

Indeed, they do! If you want to make a true Hawaiian Puka Dog, you should use a normal roll. The buns at Puka Dog are not as sweet as the rolls at King’s Hawaiian. However, I’m certain they would be delicious in this dish!

If you decide to prepare all of the sauces in the following recipes, I suggest purchasing plastic squeeze condiment bottles to store them in.
