Love pesto? Love pizza? This pizza with pesto and green beans is for you! The traditional tomato sauce is replaced with basil pesto. This is not a pizza rossa – nor a pizza bianca. It’s a pizza verde! And in a nod to the original pesto pasta recipe, we’ve included green beans to boost the green element. And parmesan flakes!
Yes, green beans are included in true Ligurian pasta al pesto. Potatoes as well. It’s a divine combination, however unexpected it may seem. The potatoes add creaminess to the sauce, while the green beans add flavor and texture. Pesto pasta with potatoes and pesto potato salad with green beans are a must-try!
In this piece, I’ll show you another delicious way to enjoy pesto: on pizza. And before you even begin to doubt, yes, this is a traditional Italian dish. Pesto is sometimes used instead of tomato sauce on an Italian pizza, especially in its home region of Liguria and the areas around it.
Pesto pizza ingredients
Your preferred store-bought pesto is delicious, but homemade pesto is always superior. This simple basil pesto is made with a hand blender and yields enough for two pizzas.
Regarding pizza dough, if you have a reliable store-bought dough, feel free to use it. If you prefer to make your own dough, my simple pizza dough recipe is plenty for one pizza. Have time for a lengthy fermentation and desire a larger quantity of dough? Give my poolish pizza dough an opportunity!
